What is a Masters Athlete?

By agreement with WMA and the IAAF, "Masters" is defined as women and men 35 and over.  Therefore, Masters championship competition is limited to those ages, in 5-year age groups.

Masters competition is also generally provided for "sub-masters" of both sexes, who are younger than the official Masters ages, but are at least 30 years old; i. e., men and women aged 30 to 34.  The CMAA encourages all athletic events to include a "Masters" category, using our age groups, and we are pleased that many include such a category now, although several events define Masters as being 40 years of age and older.

Who can join?

Membership in the CMAA is open to men and women 30 years of age and over, who are interested in Masters and sub-masters fitness.

Membership in the CMAA is available for each calendar year (January 1 to December 31), and renewals of membership are due by January 31 of each year. New memberships received after September 1 of one year are valid until the end of the following year. Memberships are available either as individuals or as a family, defined as two persons of the same family living at the same address. Both family members receive the full benefits of membership in the CMAA, except that only one copy of CMAA correspondence, including the MASTERpiece, is provided to each family.

Membership can be purchased for periods of one, two or three years, with fee reductions given for membership periods greater than one year. For residents of Ontario, the Ontario masters organization, Ontario Masters Track & Field Association (OMTFA), collects CMAA membership fees as part of its membership process, and its members therefore automatically become members of the CMAA.  See “Ontario Masters”.

NOTE: Please include a photocopy of a proof of your date of birth (birth certificate, passport or driver's licence), if you have not already provided it to the CMAA.
